Uttar Pradesh working on draft industrial policy

New Delhi/ Agra With the industrial policy of the state becoming outdated in the changed global scenario, the Uttar Pradesh government has begun formulating a new draft industrial policy that will replace the state's three-year old industrial policy.

According to K L Meena, director (industries), Uttar Pradesh, the UP department of industries has been asked to prepare the policy draft by working in cooperation with the neighbouring states that have successfully implemented their industrial programme and this policy draft shall be ready soon.

Meena was in Agra to address a two-day industrial awareness seminar organized by the National Chamber of Industries and Commerce (NCIC), UP on Thursday.

Talking to mediapersons, Meena said the new industrial policy shall be targeted towards catering to the specific demands of Industrial development in Agra and the other industrially backward cities. He said the government was aware of the problem of the shortage of land for establishing new industries in Agra and the UPSIDC had been directed to accelerate the development of a new industrial enclave in Agra.

According to Rajiv Gupta, president, NCIC, the chamber had also raised the issue of setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for the footwear, automobile and software industries and the department of industries had agreed to provide all possible assistance to the local industrialists in setting up this SEZ. However, the private sector has to come forward in this matter before the government took any step in the direction, he added.

He said the principal issue before the Agra industrialists was to establish an industry that, being non-polluting, was not prone to the frequent modifications in the pollution norms that had already forced the closure of the foundry, diesel engine and tannery units of Agra.

In this respect, he said, setting up an industry manufacturing solar cells could prove to be highly profitable to the local industrialists but in setting up this industry from scratch, the industrialists needed both technical and monetary assistance from the government which, they shall hopefully receive in the new industrial policy.
