Agra. The intensive Care Unit of a hospital is specialised for providing intensive healthcare to critical patients who are fighting for their life, manned by healthcare specialists. But this Agra medico uses the ICU as a hideout to save himself from the merciless beating by his wife.
The cases of post-wedding violence faced by women in the hands of their husbands are quite common. But when a husband complains of facing three-year-long brutality by his wife, it's something that easily draws attention.
The police personnel posted at the Hari Parwat police station of Agra were deeply surprised on Monday, when a local medico climbed the steps of the station to file a complain against his wife Leena, also a medico, who had been allegedly beating him ever since their marriage about three years ago.
Citing his medical reports that detailed every beating he had received so far in the hands of his wife, Dr Himanshu Kulshreshtha, a resident anaesthetist at the Pushpanjali Hospital in Agra, claimed that he had been badly beaten up several times by his wife throughout their married life, once even fracturing his arm. He had been keeping the matter in the family to prevent damage to his reputation.
He said he had married to Leena in 2003. Soon after their wedding, he realised that she was not happy.
A few months later, Leena started threatening to commit suicide if he did not "dump" his parents. Helpless Dr Kulshreshtha separated from his family and it was then that Leena showed her colours.
According to Dr Kulshreshtha, he was beaten everyday by Leena in one or the other pretext with wooden sticks and batons.
On October 29, 2005, she hit him so hard that his arm developed a fracture. But, he did not take any action as she threatened to get him implicated in the dowry harassment. He added that he was worried about his reputation among the medico fraternity.
On March 17, Leena sent an SMS to Kulshreshtha asking him to come out of the ICU. When he came out, she beat him up publicly, which prompted him to filing a complaint.
According to RK Singh, Inspector in charge, Hari Parwat police station, the police have registered a case under Section 323, 504, 506 and 325 and 499 of the IPC against Dr Leena Kulshreshtha, an original resident of Kota in Rajasthan. But the accused wife who runs an ophthalmic clinic in the town could not be arrested as she is reportedly absconding after the incident.
He said the police were still waiting for the doctor's wife to make her appearance and give her version of the story before any action was taken against her.
