ASI files FIR over namaz at Idgah

Agra. Following the row between the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Agra administration over unauthorised namaz offered at the local Idgah two weeks back, despite ASI objections, an FIR has been filed by ASI against one lakh unidentified Muslims for flouting the ban on offering namaz at Idgah.

ASI has also filed a formal complaint with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary against the uncooperative attitude of the Agra administration, including District Magistrate Sanjay Prasad.

According to ASI Superintending Archeologist D Dayalan, almost one lakh Muslims defied the ban on religious activities inside the protected Idgah by breaking open the main gate locks and holding a religious meeting and offering namaz inside the Idgah.

He said the ASI had registered its objections with the local administration against the Idgah being used for anti-cartoon demonstration by the Muslims. But, apparently, the Agra district magistrate did not pay heed to the objections personally made by the ASI Director-General C Babu Rajeev and allowed the ban to be breached by the mob with open support from the administration and the police, which was highly objectionable.

He said the ASI tried to file an FIR against the mob, but the police refused to register the complaint.
After this, the FIR was sent through registered post.

Besides, he said, a formal complaint has been made with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary R Ramani against the conduct of the district magistrate and other administration officials.

Notably, the dispute between the Agra administration and the ASI arose on February 24, over the Agra administration permitting the namaz and anti-Denmark demonstration to be conducted at the local Idgah despite ASI regulations prohibiting any religious or community activities on days other than the two Eids.
Since then, the district administration and ASI authorities have been blaming each other for being "insensitive".
