Austrian student alleges sexual harassment

Agra. The Agra-based Kendriya Hindi Sansthan under the department of Education of the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development is world renowned among students coming to India to study Hindi.

The institute is gaining notoriety of being unsafe for foreign female students, all due to the alleged activities of a professor.

In a shocking revelation, a former Austrian student of the institute has in a letter, addressed to the institute's registrar Dr Chandrakant Tripathi, accused her Hindi professor of making sexual advances, which ultimately compelled her to leave the course in mid-term and return home in order to save herself from his clutches.

In the wake of the serious charge by the student, the institute director (acting) Professor Kutumb Shastri has set up a committee to investigate the incident which will be headed by the registrar.

Talking to The Pioneer, Dr Chadrakant Tripathi, registrar, said that Judith Antonio Rainer, a student of Hindi, who had arrived under an exchange programme about five months back, had suddenly disappeared in mid-term from the institute on February 19.
He said it was only after a letter was received, that the institute learnt the student had returned home, apparently after she was sexually harassed by a Hindi professor, who had been identified even though the student had not named him.

He said that till the investigation of the committee was concluded, he was unable to reveal the name of this professor.

According to Mr Tripathi, there were 70 foreign students currently studying Hindi in the institute out of whom female students formed the bulk, but he had never come across such a complaint before.

This was the first time that a student had complained about sexual exploitation by a professor, and it was a matter of grave concern for the institute as it could spoil its reputation in academic circles.
