Theatre artists to rake it up for Babbar on streets

Agra. When trouble came calling for Agra MP and film star Raj Babbar over his vitriolic statements against Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, it is his long-forgotten theatrical stint that has come to his rescue.

Apart from the social and cultural organisations of his two-time parliamentary constituency, Mr Babbar is now getting an open support from his friends in the theatre, who have decided to hold Pol Khol street plays throughout the State, in support of Mr Babbar and in an effort "to reveal the true nature of Mr Mulayam Singh's regime under the influence of Mr Amar Singh".

According to some artists belonging to the "Ahvan" theatre group of the town, the theatre artists shall roam all over the State, artfully criticising the high-handed manner in which Mr Mulayam Singh had dealt with Mr Babbar's criticism of Mr Amar Singh, without going into the depth of the issue. A meeting of the theatre artists of the city was held in Agra on Thursday to discuss the script of the street-play.

Meanwhile, Mr Babbar, being dubbed as the "last action hero" of the Samajwadi Party, found an unexpected supporter in the form of fellow theatre artist and film star Raza Murad, who said that Mr Mulayam Singh should expel "Dirty Putras" from his party, if he wished to keep his claim on the title "Dharti Putra".

Talking to The Pioneer, Dr Dharmpal Singh, representative of Mr Babbar in Agra said that even if Mr Babbar was expelled from the party, he would still remain the city's representative in Parliament and to prove his oneness with the people of Agra, Mr Babbar will visit the town on February 26.

Interestingly, it has been a common trait of Mr Babbar's political career to fall back on his theatrical roots in times of strife, whether it is during elections or now, when he is going through the worst crisis of his political career, facing possible expulsion from the party.
