Agra. Atul Group of Industries, an ISO 9001:2000 certified group of Agra based companies has introduced an entire range of poly propylene random copolymer-based plumbing pipes, in technical collaboration with Reliance Industries.

Talking to the media persons on this occasion, Sanjeev Mittal, managing director, Atul Group of Industries, said the group's production included diesel gensets, diesel engiens, PVC, HDPE and Asbestos pipes, besides water storage tanks. The group covers 70 per cent of Agra's total storage tank market.

About PPRc pipes, Mittal said they were a new range of products in India and only a select few companies were manufacturing such pipes in the entire country. So far, the market share of Polypropylene pipes in the country have been restricted to merely 2.4 per cent of the total volume of pipes used for plumbing and other applications, with the entire market being captured by PVC based pipes.

The new pipe, he said, till date, simply non-existent in Agra and even if some pipe was made available to the end-user by the retailers, it was only through the grey market. However, things are expected to brighten up since now, besides being 30 per cent cheaper than GI pipes, PPRc pipes will provide a solution to the problems faced by the users of PVC and GI pipes.

According to Mittal, the inherent problems in the PVC-based pipes like cracking, inability to withstand sudden changes in water temperatures, inability to transport chemicals and the lack of flexibility had already created a vaccum for a new technology of pipes that did not pose such problems. Besides, he said, even the GI pipes had a life of barely 8-10 years, while the new technology extended the life of the pipes to more than 50 years.

The Chinese government had already prohibited the use of GI pipes in the new housing projects and renovations, owing to the problems of leakage and short life span and the PPRc-based pipes had come as a perfect solution for the booming housing industry.

The group, engaged in the manufacture of PVC and HDPE pipes since the past 18 years, had already received technical assistance from Reliance Industries. RIL had helped the company in setting up a manufacturing facility for these pipes and fixtures in Agra, besides providing the necessary training to Atul group staff for the production of such pipes.

Besides these, he said, the group had also launched sanitary bins and GI trolleys, specially suited for both domestic and community usage. Despite being made of plastic, the bins were capable of withstanding mechanical lifting and these bins had already been approved by the municipal authorities of a number of cities in the country. The product is expected to arrive in the market within this week.
