Developed India not possible without a developed Uttar Pradesh - UP Chief Minister

VISHAL SHARMA
AGRA, 04 Jan. "No matter which party or coalition forms the government in the center, the dream of a developed country cannot be realized by ignoring the development of Uttar Pradesh", warned the UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday.
Mulayam Singh had arrived in Agra to inaugurate the newly constructed building of the Trade Tax department in Jaipur House with the cost of 2.5 crores. Trying to make the impression of a "Trader-friendly" government on the small & middle level traders of the state, the Chief Minister said that he does not believe in the publicity of the work he's doing for the state's development as the state can only be said to be developed, if the traders and the common man feel that way. Accordingly, he announced several concessions in the trade tax structure to be introduced soon
He said that the economy of the state runs on the trade tax paid in by its traders and this government has always thought about the welfare of these businessmen, an example of which is that UP is the only state that still has not accepted Value Added Tax (VAT) system imposed on the traders by the Central Government. Throwing the VAT ball in the Union government's court, Mr. Yadav said that if the Finance Minister is ready to hear out the UP traders, the state of UP is also ready to accept VAT, but this issue can only be solved by mutual agreement of the Finance minister and the UP traders and the UP government is not willing to make any compromise on the issue of the welfare of its businessmen.
He said that back in the 1993 elections, he had realized that for winning the elections, the party also needed the support of the businessmen who were voting for other parties, but when he tried to attract this community towards the SP, this step was criticized by a number of mainstream leaders within his party who were not confident that this step would reap any fruit. But now, it is clear that the Samajwadi Party has successfully turned the tides by learning from the mistakes made by the other parties and the traders are now voting for the Samajwadi Party, while the parties who claimed the support of these traders earlier, folded up their tents. He said that the business is growing in UP and multinational companies are willing to setup their businesses in the state, which symbolizes the developing faith of the businessmen in the Samajwady Party led government.
He said that making big plans of development does not matter, what really matters is how and when they are implemented. He said that at present Uttar Pradesh is standing in the row of under-developed states but still, the Union govt. is not releasing the 1100 crores of financial aid earmarked by the World Bank for the development of UP. How can the state progress if it does not have funds to implement its development plans, he asked?
He said that the other parties may have run their governments, but to run this country, a much wider outlook is required, which the earlier governments have lacked so far. He said that his government is not the government of the Samajwadi Party, but it belongs to the 17 crore people of the state and it is for the welfare of these people that his government has been working.
Later, talking to UNN, the Chief Minister said that there is an immense vaccum in the national politics which needs to be filled by a non-Congress, non-BJP "Third Front", formed by parties who have never conformed to the ideologues of these two parties. He said that the people of this country have already tried Congress & BJP governments and their various coalitions but they are now fed up with misrule of these governments and the demand of the times is for the formation of a Third Front.
Answering a question, Mulayam Singh said that he has never been against reservation for women, but he feels that reservation shall only serve to backtrack the advancements made by the women of India so far. He said that instead of giving the women reservation, they should be given a status equal to men and he advocates this idea.
Asked about the future of the Ghaziabad Power Project in view of the Reliance tussle, Mr. Yadav said that the Ambanis are responsible people who are concerned with the development of UP and he sincerely hoped that they shall not let their internal matter affect the running of the company and its projects.
