Boy pays with life for stealing a guava in Etah

INDIA (ETAH) 11 JAN. What is the maximum punishment for stealing a fruit from an orchard? Most of us would say "One tight slap" but in Etah this crime could attract a death penalty. On Sunday, this horrifying truth came to the fore when the badly decomposed body of a nine-year-old boy was discovered in a fruit orchard of village Nagla Mudiya, about 70 kms from the district headquarters. The boy had been "hanged till death". His crime: stealing one guava from the an orchard laden with the fruit.
According to police sources, Jaswant, son of Amarpal Singh, a resident of Nagla Mudiya village in Etah, was returning from the fields on the evening of December 29 when he ventured into the orchard of Shamshad and Sadhu to pick a fruit to eat. Angered by Jaswant's "unauthorised" entry into the orchard, the two caught and strangled him to death with a rope, hiding the body. Some villagers who did witness the scuffle preferred to remain silent owing to the terror reign of the duo even when Amarpal Singh filed a missing persons report in the Raja ka Rampur police station.
It was only when Jaswant's body, badly decomposed and with a noose around the neck was discovered in another orchard belonging to Surajpal on Sunday, that some villagers came out with the real story, following which a murder complaint was filed against Shamshad and Sadhu at the behest of Amarpal Singh; the accused are yet to be apprehended. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police Etah, Ashfaq Ahmed, the police has not been able to guage the reason why the boy was murdered "out of rage." He assured that the accused shall be arrested soon.
This incident has revealed a startling fact about Etah - that even in this crime-infested district there are pockets which can make normal criminals look like angels. The brutal way in which the young boy was murdered for a fruit reflects a serious lack of fear for the law among the locals who do not think twice of even shooting the police as seen in the Nathuapur massacre of 1981 when 12 policemen, including two inspectors, were killed by criminals upon being challenged.
