Gen X: Mother, daughter wed on same day, under one roof
VIJAY UPADHYAY
India (Etah), 23 Nov. Examples of such marriages are hard to find in Indian society.
A community panchayat held in Soron town of Etah district has created an uproar by arranging the simultaneous marriage of a mother and daughter to their respective lovers on the same day under the same roof, while the Etah District Magistrate has announced a prize for the daughter in order to promote widow re-marriage.
After losing their husbands a few months ago, Mamta (45) and her daughter Preeti (22) married their respective lovers in Soron town of Etah district on Friday following the decision of a panchayat.
Soron is reputed to be the birth place of the third avatar of Vishnu and has a major religious significance for the Hindus. Being located at the banks of the Ganga river, the Mallahs (boatmen) form a large community here and the Mallahs abide by the panchayat's decisions.
According to sources, Mamta, the wife of Raghuvar, who belonged to the Mallah community had married her daughter Preeti off, a year ago. But soon after her marriage, Preeti's husband passed away and she was thrown out of her house by her in-aws.
Preeti returned to her father's home, where she soon fell in love with Bharat, her neighbour. But before she could talk to her father regarding this issue, Raguvar too passed away.
Preeti continued her affair with Bharat. In the meantime her mother Mamta too, fell in love with Girish, another neighbour.
However, the issue came out in the open when Preeti disappeared from her home and returned late at night with Bharat in toe. When the angry Mamta confronted Preeti on her affair with Bharat, Preeti too berated Mamta on her "illicit" relations with Girish.
Soon, the fight between the two women got out of hand and the neighbours had to call in the police, who, on learning the reason behind this quarrel, suggested that the Mallah community settle the issue through the panchayat.
The panchayat was held on Wednesday night itself. The panches decided that if Mamta wanted to re-marry she would have to first get her daughter Preeti married to her lover Bharat.
Mamta happily agreed to this and on Friday, the mother and daughter married simultaneously under the same roof setting off a debate on the changing values of society.
District Magistrate, Etah, RP Shukla on Sunday said that widow re-marriage was a step in the right direction and announced an award of Rs 11,000 for Preeti, in order to promote such practice.
