Price hike in dairy products in UP

The rising heat of summer has begun to show its affects on the prices of milk and milk products in Uttar Pradesh where the dairy units have raised the price of milk by Rs 2 per litre, while the rest of the products too have experienced a significant price hike that is expected to continue till the end of June this year.

Parag Dairy, one of the largest milk producers of the state, raised the milk and milk products prices recently, claiming that the milk supply, obtained from the rural cooperative societies had decreased while the demand for milk was still high.

Local dairy units that have entered the organized milk segment, including Bhole Baba Milk Food Industries Ltd, Ajanta Raj, KS Singhal, Milan dairy too are either contemplating to raise the prices of both indigenous food products like milk, curd, ghee and western products like milk powder, cheese, table butter and ice cream, or have already raised the prices claiming that the milk supply was dwindling and it was difficult to maintain the cold-storage of the milk in the erratic power conditions.

Even in the rural areas of the town, where small dairy units are thriving on supply of milk from the nearby villages, the milk prices have risen to Rs. 18 per litre while cheese prices are as high as Rs. 120 per kg.

Even the milk-based sweet manufacturers have sought to raise the prices of sweets in the town due to the rise in raw material prices with sweet prices witnessing a hike between 10 and 15 per cent.

According to the sources at Parag Dairy, this price hike was expected to continue till the end of this June as the milk supply was largely dependent on the availability of green cattle-feed which shall only be available during the monsoons.
