Agra Univ VC surrenders in court, is released on bond

Nearly a week after receiving court summons, Agra University vice-chancellor Avtar Singh Kukla finally surrendered in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Agra, on Tuesday.
Kukla is wanted by the Uttar Pradesh police in connection with the death of a university employee under mysterious circumstances two years ago. The employee was allegedly tortured severely by Kukla's personal secretary and bodyguard at his behest.
Refused bail twice by the High Court, Kukla finally managed to obtain conditional bail orders from the Supreme Court, despite the UP Home Secretary and the state police filing an affidavit in the court charging Kukla with the crime. Attempting to surrender privately in the chamber of the CJM, Agra, Shamshul Haq, Kukla had to face stiff opposition from lawyers.
