UP govt invites traders to help in state`s growth

New Delhi/ Agra. The UP government’s decision to facilitate the entry of new entrepreneurs in the state through various offers has received considerable applause from the Agra trade bodies, including the National Chamber of Industries and Commerce.

However, industrialists have expressed concern at the fact that industrial growth in Uttar Pradesh is being seriously affected by political instability in the state.

Notably, the UP cabinet has decided to offer up to 200 per cent financial assistance and perks to the entrepreneurs expressing an interest to invest over Rs 100 crore in the state.

Expressing the views of the NCIC and other trade bodies of Agra, Anil Verma, president, NCIC, said that the UP traders had welcomed this step taken by the state government but it was still a fact that this step could go in the same way as the UP Development Council that had managed to attract big industrialists like Reliance and Godrej to the state but when the Reliance Energy project got stuck in the red tape, Godrej backtracked.

Mr Verma said that the industrialists needed to have a single window system for the clearance of projects in the state on the lines of states like Gujarat otherwise there was little possibility of industrialists being attracted to the state despite the perks offered by the state government.

He said that there was high possibility of the establishment of non-polluting industries like solar-cell manufacturing, handicrafts, shoe industry etc. and industrialists coming in from other states could be attracted to the town by offering special perks to the industries.

Talking to Business Standard, Rajiv Gupta, former President of NCIC, said that this step would put an effective check on the state’s industries that were fast slipping away to Uttaranchal to take the advantage of the tax holiday offered by the Uttaranchal government.

He said that Agra offered a distinct advantage to the software industry, being quite close to Delhi and having a large tech-savvy population.

Besides, he said, the automobile spare parts sector too will benefit from the state government’s offer.
