UP to strip Defence vehicles off designation plates too?

Agra. After stripping vehicles off their 'designation plates' - including those which proclaimed the State's top politicians, bureaucrats and police officials -- in a special drive last week, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department is now seeking legal opinion on the applicability of this order on the armed forces' vehicles.

Talking to The Pioneer, UP transport commissioner RP Shukla said that while hearing a writ petition on correct implementation of traffic rules in the State, the High Court of Uttar Pradesh had passed an order asking the Transport Department to ensure vehicles plying on the streets of the State fully complied with the Central Motor Vehicles (3rd Amendment) Rules 2000. The Central Motor Vehicles (3rd Amendment) Rules 2000 include installation of correct format vehicle number plates - and forbids all other types of designation plates -- fitted on either Government or private vehicles.

Following this order, he said, the Transport Department decided to launch a special Statewide drive, removing all designation plates installed on Government and private automobiles. Presently district magistrates and senior police officials, along with top bureaucrats, have already removed the designation plates from their vehicles, while majority of the politicians are still being coaxed into following suit.

Shukla said that in the order it was clear that even the political leaders of the State can not flaunt their "authority" by means of snazzy designation plates and party colours and accordingly, even the ministers, legislators and others of their ilk, have been asked to voluntarily remove heir designation plates by the end of this week after which, the Transport Department will penalise such vehicles and remove the 'culprit' plates forcibly.

Shukla said that while the order was clearly applicable on civilian vehicles, its applicability on vehicles belonging to defence forces, registered under their unique ID system, is still a debatable issue and the Transport Department was seeking legal opinion on it. The Department is being careful ion not taking any step that could easily mean disturbing a hornet's nest.
