Targeting terror in desi style

Agra. The Agra Police have come up with a unique mode of investigation, following the latest threats to blow up the Taj Mahal and a Jain Temple on Aug15.

The police had received some letters allegedly written by Mohd Mirza, an operative of the terrorist organisation Al-Qaida.

The local police have come up with a unique mode of investigating the identity of the "miscreants" who wrote this letter to create nation-wide panic.

Even though the local police have declared the threat letters to have been written by local mischief mongers, no terrorist organisation or the Intelligence Bureau has taken the matter seriously enough for the Dy. Director IB Shiv Vardhan Singh to make a trip down to Agra, just to check upon the security arrangements of the Taj Mahal.

On Wednesday, Shiv Vardhan Singh visited the Taj Mahal in the afternoon and went through the security arrangements available at the Taj in detail.

He recommended that the cloak room and ticket counters built in to the main wall of eastern gate of the monument should be shifted atleast 500 meters away as it hinted a danger to the monument's security.

He also recommended that the police and CISF should maintain special vigil over the visitors at the Taj Mahal's mosque during the Friday namaz to discourage any anti-social elements from entering the Taj in the guise of a namazi.

To identify the miscreants, who wrote these letters, the local Police adopted "investigation by brute force". The Police have been randomly picking up the local youths with criminal profile from the suspected areas of Rakabganj and Tajganj and making them copy the threat letter in their own handwriting.

According to the Rakabganj police Station-in-Charge D.L. Sudhir, the Police have detained large number of youths in connection to these letters.

So far, there had been no luck in the investigation and all the detained youths had to be subsequently released.

Meanwhile, senior police officials confirmed that the security at the Taj Mahal has been increased after the letters were discovered at the doorstep of the Jain Temple in Rakabganj area.

A fresh contingent of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) has been deployed outside the monument, in addition to the existing guard detail.

Besides the PAC, a large number of police personnel both in uniform and plain clothes have also been deployed in the area surrounding the monument after the directions issued by the State home secretary R.M. Srivastava.
