'Govt's awry policies lead to economic mismanagement'

Agra. It is often said that "too many cooks spoil the broth" and, according to BJP president Rajnath Singh, this is what is happening with the country's economy, which is being torn to shreds by three "top economists" of the country - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Planning Commission Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Addressing his first rally in the Ramlila grounds of Agra on Sunday after he assumed the leadership of the BJP, which is also being seen as the first pre-poll declaration of the party's readiness to go into election mode in UP, party chief Rajnath Singh said the country was being dragged into a void by the Congress-led UPA Government. He said it had created a history in economic mismanagement by its awry policies and resulted in the worst foodgrains crisis in the past ten years at a time when the country could have been comfortably self-reliant in foodgrains and other essential commodities.
Behind this crisis, he said, was the UPA Government's decision to allow online futures trading in essential commodities, which had created a "never-before" state of inflation in the entire country and the Government was still claiming that it had controlled the inflation rates from rising.
Commenting on the Central Government's decision to import foodgrains from Australia and Italy, he said that even in this import deal, the Government was using the services of a company that had been "certified" as tainted in the Volcker report.
He said that it was the Narasimha Rao Government that had stopped the Indian scientists from conducting nuclear tests under the pressure of the United States when the country had already developed nuclear capabilities during his term.
And again, he said, while the BJP Government had boldly led the country through the US sanctions imposed after the nuclear tests conducted during the term of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Congress-led UPA Government had done just the opposite by again cowering before the US yet again and signing a nuclear treaty that had been designed to restrain the country from achieving its earlier goal of developing an effective nuclear deterrent force. At the same time, Pakistan was being allowed to go ahead with its plans for a nuclear reactor that was clearly intended to build more and more nuclear weapons.
He said when the farmers were committing suicide due to the burden of loans, high interest rates and the lack of Government subsidy, the Central Government was busy planning for a 15 per cent budget provision for the welfare of Muslims, which clearly showed that the UPA Government lacked the vision to run this country.
On this occasion, Rajnath declared that if the BJP was voted into power, the first step it shall take would be to drop the interest rates for farmer loans to 5 per cent, while also shutting down online trade in essential commodities as this was the most significant factor that had created the present foodgrains crisis in the country.
