Mathura firm to make tubes for cosmetics, toiletries

VISHAL SHARMA

AGRA. The market for cosmetic and toiletries in India is worth more than 950 Million US Dollars out of which, the skin care market accounts for almost 120 million US Dollars.

The market for skin care products such as moisturizing lotions, fairness creams and facial cleansers has grown steadily in recent years with these products accounting for approximately 60 percent of the skin-care segment.

The major players in this segment are Lakme, Ponds, Fair & Lovely, J.L. Morison and Revlon, almost all of whom rely on Indian packaging firms to supply them with Squeeze PE tubes that form an essential part of their products but so far, there are not many players in the field and most of the PE tube production scene is captured single-handedly by Essel Propack Ltd.

But a Mathura based packaging firm is now targeting to make its own mark in this business by establishing one of the first seamless PE tube manufacturing units in North India, with the cost of Rs. 10 crores, especially for consumption in the high-end cosmetics market.

Talking to Business Standard, Rakesh Agarwal, Director, Prabhat Rotopack Pvt. Ltd., located in the Mathura Industrial area, about 50 km. from Agra currently specialized in the manufacture of flexible laminates for companies like GSM, Shakti Bhog & Ceat Ltd. with a yearly turnover of about Rs. 25 crores but it was now planning to diversify in the field of PE tube manufacture with the new tube manufacturing unit to begin production by February this year.

He said that the infrastructural cost to establish the unit was expected to arrive at almost Rs. 10 crores out of which, the main tube manufacturing plant alone would cost Rs. 6 crores, as it was being imported from Bonmart Enterprises Corporation in Taiwan, which was the exclusive manufacturer of such units in Asia.

He said that the main target of the company was the 120 million USD market for skin care cosmetics of India, which almost completely depended on the availability of PE tubes for dispensing these cosmetics, a field in which, Zee Telefims owned Essel Propack
was the biggest player at present.

According to Mr. Agarwal, the company expected to achieve a production of about 25 lac tubes per month by the coming fiscal year. Already, he said, major cosmetic and dental care products manufacturing companies were making business queries with the company and hopefully, the new unit would double the company’s turnover to atleast Rs. 50 crores by the end of the fiscal year 2006-2007.
