'Indo-Pak entente is crucial' - Retd. Pak Generals

VIJAY UPADHYAY

INDIA (AGRA), 7 Dec. Almost four decades after fighting the last war with India, top former Pakistani military commanders have termed the Indo-Pak wars of the past as "foolhardy" expressing an urgent need for thawing the ice on mutual relations.
A 25-member delegation of top former military commanders of Pakistan and their families had arrived in Agra on Sunday to visit the historical monuments here. Talking to the media at Sikandra on this occasion, retired Pakistani Air Chief Marshal Zafar Chowdhary said he has the unique experience of having served in both the Indian and the Pakistan Air Force. He fought for India before independence and fought against India in the 1965 war, but he has now realised that there was absolutely no need for cross-border hostilities as most of the differences can be solved through mutual discussions.
He said that there is hardly any difference in the cultures and natural diversities of both the countries and borders can only divide land, not hearts. He said that base of all hostilities lies in joining religion with politics; and these two should be kept separate. He said that having spent a large part of his youth in India, gaining education in Delhi before independence, he can safely comment that Pakistan is quite behind India in terms of education and prosperity
as a large part of the domestic revenue of both the countries gets spent in beefing up security on the common border and arming their militaries which hardly affects Indian economy, but greatly affects the economy of Pakistan.
On the issue of cross-border terrorism, Retd Pakistani Rear-Admiral Hassan Ansari said that terrorism is a global threat and it exists in Pakistan too. Even the Pakistani Prime Minister escaped a terrorist bid on his life recently so it is not right to claim that only India is threatened by terrorism.
