Krishna nagri buys milk from Gujarat

The Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, comprising of Agra, Mathura and some parts of Rajasthan, brimming with milk and milk products, has been known as the land of cows since the era of Lord Krishna. Most influential politicians here are also associated with the milk business, earning several crores each year through this trade.
But with the number of dairy cattle dying each year because of the unavailability of green fodder, affecting the milk production, the region is now forced to import milk from Gujarat, the land where Lord Krishna reigned in his last years.
Cashing in on the milk crisis in the Braj region, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), marketing its milk with the renowned brand name Amul, entered the Agra region last week, in a tie-up with Kwality Dairy India Pvt Ltd.
Arriving raw from the Sabar dairy, run by the Sabarkantha District Milk Producers Union functioning under GCMMF, the milk will be soon made available in the entire Northern India, except Delhi, where Mehsana dairy has already made its presence felt, marketing the Amul brand.
Company officials in Agra claimed that the milk arriving from the Sabar dairy in Gujarat shall be processed and packed in the Kwality Dairy India Ltd plant in Palwal, to be dispatched into the entire Braj region.
According to the officials, the prices of Amul milk would remain at par with the milk prices in Delhi, selling it at Rs 18 a litre for toned milk and Rs 22 for full cream milk with an initial dispatch of about 25,000 litres from Sabar dairy's recently acquired plants in Gujarat.
Within the coming three months, sources claimed, Amul milk will be available in the entire Northern and Western Uttar Pradesh, covering Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Ghaziabad and Meerut.
According to the officials, currently there was a surplus of milk at Sabar dairy and by spreading its network in UP, it's target is to create a demand for this surplus milk.
Presently, they said, about 11 lakh litres of milk was being procured by Sabar from farmers in Gujarat everyday and in just three years, the available milk volume will rise to 15 lakh litres, thereby raising the surplus milk volume, for which a market will have to be created in advance.
Sources claimed that as Amul milk was already available in Delhi through Mehsana dairy, also functioning under GCMMF, the milk from Sabar dairy would not be marketed in Delhi, though it will be available in NCR.
