UP bureaucrats resent being labelled 'corrupt'

Vow not to take illegal decisions under pressure

The image of the bureaucracy in Uttar Pradesh is often ranked among the most corruption-infested administrative machineries across the country.

But the State's bureaucrats are now unwilling to continue being labelled with this negative image, which, they claim, has been attributed to them due to the 'unholy' nexus of some select bureaucrats with the politicians and mafia.

Vowing to reveal the roots of this nexus, the UP bureaucrats took out a road-march on the streets of Agra on Friday, under the aegis of the 'UP Officers Council', led by council chairman and senior State administrative official Hardev Singh, voicing the anger of the officers of 'UP Provincial Civil Services' (UPPCS) against their being 'branded' corrupt officials.

Judging from the current political scenario in the State, where Assembly elections are imminent and the State officials are facing one or the other form of political pressure from the ruling party to take absolutely illegal decisions, the sudden 'awakening' of the administrative officials could land both the politicians and the power-brokers in deep trouble.

Talking to The Pioneer, Hardev Singh said PCS officials were often forced by politicians and mafia to take decisions that were contravening to the established laws and by taking such actions, the PCS officials were branded as corrupt.

This was unacceptable and the road-march was a way to demonstrate their final 'awakening' and the oneness in their will to shed off this image and the political influence on the entire PCS cadre.

He said that following the march, the PCS officials vowed to resist all forms of pressure exerted on them in the course of their duty, whether it was political or criminal. The officials also vowed to demolish the unholy nexus of politicians, mafia and bureaucrats by revealing the roots of this nexus to the public.

According to Singh, the PCS officials have been taking out such road marches in all divisions of the State through the past weeks, participated by the nearly 50,000 State Government officials who are members of the council.

More such marches will continue to enlighten the State officials of their powers that they had obviously forgotten under political pressure, he said.
