A minor dispute over gambling in a shoe factory at Mantola area of Agra turned into a violent communal clash on Tuesday night, bringing the entire city into the grip of terror in the dead of night.

Two police personnel and a dozen local residents were injured in police firing to control the mob.

According to Dr. Siraj Qureshi, a resident of the Mantola area, the dispute began when some people belonging to one community raised objection to a make-shift gambling house being run by the other community at a shoe factory located on the Madina crossing. Reacting to the objection, the gamblers attacked them.

Though the local police station was barely two hundred metres away from the site, they took two hours in reaching there, by which time, the situation had aggravated considerably.

The situation was brought under control at about 1 am on Wednesday.
