College forms cultural squad to prevent girl students from going haywire

VIJAY UPADHYAY
Aligarh.          The open-mindedness of metropolitan cities simply does not exist here. For the college girls in Aligarh, being seen roaming with their boy-friends in college time could mean instant expulsion from college and humiliation, not by the police, but by the “cultural commandoes” of the college.
Tired of receiving continual complaints from the parents of the college girls about their daughter’s liaisons with young men during college time, Manju Saraswat, principal of the renowned T.R. Girls College has setup a squad of college teachers that conducts raids in the markets all over the town, catching such college girls who are found roaming around in the market during college time.
During one such raid that was conducted by the disciplinary squad at a cyber café of the town on Wednesday upon information from the locals, a B.A. final year student of the college was found in “objectionable conditions” with her boyfriend inside the locked cabin of a cyber-café near the college. The couple was immediately dragged out of the café into the open market and while the “boyfriend” was given a thorough thrashing by the college proctors and handed over to the police, the girl was unceremoniously dumped into the back of a Jeep by the proctors and brought back to the college.
In the college, the girl was filled in with a long lecture on college discipline and moral conduct by the principal in front of her parents and the other college girls, before letting her go with a final warning.
Later, talking to The Pioneer on Thursday, Manju Saraswat, the college principal said that inspired with the “Cable-Television” culture, the girls had begun “dating” with local youth by bunking classes during college time. She said that she had been receiving continuous complaints from the parents of her students that the girls were not attending college and a few girls had even been seen moving around in the market near the college with their “boyfriends” by the college staff.
Worried with the deteriorating image of the college among the parents in Aligarh, she had now organized a squad of teachers who would conduct random searches of the local markets and cyber cafés and catch the girls who were found in these markets during the college time. She said that on Wednesday too, she had received information that one of the college girls had been seen going inside a cyber-café with a youth. When she checked the girl’s attendance in the college, she found that the girl had been marked absent in the register.
Reacting quickly, she ordered her “discipline squad” to conduct a raid on the café and bring the girl back to the college. When the squad reached the café, they found that the information was indeed true and Reena (name changed), a student of B.A. Final year in the college was found in an objectionable situation with Anees, a resident of Akrabad area of the town. The boy was immediately handed over to the police while the girl has been issued final warning.
She said that she has issued clear instructions to all 3500 girls studying in the college that if any other girl is found meeting boys or roaming outside the college during college time, the girl shall be immediately expelled from the college without any warning.
