UP Leather Firm may be revived

AGRA. Four years after it was shut down for not being able to achieve its production goals, the UP Leather Development & Marketing Corporation Ltd. in Agra may be revived soon by the UP government.
This indication was given by the Agra Member of parliament Raj Babbar while talking to the mediapersons recently. According to Mr. Babbar, the issue of LAMCO closure has been raised before the UP Chief Minister and it may be revived soon.
According to Raj Kumar Sama, a former director in LAMCO, established in Agra in 1974 with the goal of promoting unorganized footwear manufacturers and providing them with raw material and marketing assistance, LAMCO was engaged in the production of police boots for the UP government since 1974 but it was suddenly declared a sick unit and shut down by the UP government in Decmeber 2001.
He said that equipped with more than a dozen imported vulcanizing plants from Sweden, the company was fully capable for the production of quality footwear for UP police personnel but instead of LAMCO, the shoe manufacturing had now been diverted to the UP Export Corporation Ltd., which, being unable to produce footwear by itself, was outsourcing the shoes from other companies instead of the small scale shoe manufacturing units, for whom, LAMCO had been established.
He said that while LAMCO, which sold more than 70 thousand pairs of shoes every year, already had a stock of shoes worth more than 40 lac rupees was losing business to large footwear manufacturers, the LAMCO closure had also seriously affected the unorganized footwear manufacturers of Agra, who did not have access to quality raw material, forcing them to lay down their tools.
Now, with the UP government showing interest in re-opening LAMCO or merging it with the UP Export Corporation, the small scale footwear manufacturers could again hope for a chance to survive amongst the big fish, he said.
