Black is bad for UP's 'men in black'

Agra. Contrary to the impression presented by the way the high-profile lawyers working at the Supreme Court and High Courts carry themselves, the working conditions of ordinary lawyers working at the Uttar Pradesh district courts are far from being comfortable.

Sitting in shanties built on open grounds in the court campus, the lawyers are completely exposed to the furies of nature, be it the sweltering summer heat, bone-chilling winds of winter or the drenching showers of monsoon, with little shelter offered by the meagre tin-shades that form the "offices" of these lawyers.
On top of these, the mandatory "British-era" dress code of wearing an all-season black coat wrecks havoc on these lawyers who have to continually don this heavy black-cloak just to conform to the dress code prescribed by the Bar Council of India. While Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had promised the construction of chambers of these lawyers almost a year back, these much-awaited chambers are still not ready.
Meanwhile, taking pity on the state of lawyers in the summer months, especially in Uttar Pradesh, the Bar Council of India has now decided to allow the lawyers in the UP district courts to deviate "slightly" from the prescribed dress code, by making the black coat as "optional" during the months of May to September.
Talking to The Pioneer, UP Bar Council secretary, PN Tyagi said that the summer months are especially severe in UP where temperature in the open could reach upto 48 degrees celsius in the day. In this weather, a black coat was nothing but an additional burden on the lawyers.
