Delhi, not UP, in top 10 list of crime: Mulayam

Agra.    At a time when countrywide concern has been expressed over the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, the State's Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has produced a "US certification" to prove that the UP crime situation was nowhere near Delhi.

Addressing a public meeting in Agra on Sunday, which was surprisingly avoided by the SP MP from Agra film star Raj Babbar, Mulayam Singh quoted a report published by an US agency, that did not list Uttar Pradesh among the ten top lawless states of India and accentuated the fact that the report did mention Delhi.

The Chief Minister said UP had the best record of action taken against influential criminals. "There were a number of states in the country like Andhra Pradesh, where being a Chief Minister's son meant you could even escape with murder charges," the Chief Minister said.

He said Ghazipur MLA Krishnanad Rai's murder was a crime, but this murder had removed a criminal from the face of the State, in which Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari was being implicated. "He and his entire family are patriots, with only the Mau MLA Mukhtar Ansari being an exception," he said.

He said that he had put Afzal Ansari behind the bars in view of the people's demand for an impartial inquiry into the murder. "I personally believed that Afzal Ansari was not involved in Rai's murder," he said.

Mr Mulayam Singh said, "To prove his impartiality, I had taken the resignation of tainted MP Parasnath Yadav even before he was declared guilty by the parliamentary probe. But I know that he had not taken any money and he had been framed in the case."

He said the best way to remove corruption in Parliament was to completely abolish MPLAD scheme and other programmes that involved grant of funds to MPs for development works in their constituencies.

He said, "After the results of the past two by-elections there was a rumour that I would resign before the expiry of the term of the government was over. But I want to make it clear that my government would complete the remaining 14 months and then go in
for elections."

On the occasion, Mulayam also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for new projects worth Rs 146.31 crore, including the construction of 163 roads and the plantation of trees worth Rs 2 crore for the Agra division, while distributing Rs 20,000 each to 2,613 girls under the Kanya Vidya Dhan scheme.
