No difference in Normal & Test Tube Babies

400 Test Tube Babies hit the ramp in Agra on Thursday

By VISHAL SHARMA

Agra, 29 Oct. A Test Tube Baby is perfectly alike a normally conceived baby and its physical & mental development is not different from the normal babies in any manner. This was the message sent forth by the world's second largest Test Tube Baby show organized by Malhotra Test Tube Baby Centre, in Hotel Holiday Inn, Agra on Thursday evening.

Participated by 400 test tube babies born at the centre since the birth of "Utsav", the first test tube baby of Agra in 1998, the baby-show was an attempt of the medico couple Dr. Narendra Malhotra & Dr. Mrs. Jaideep Malhotra to disprove the myths that have stunted the growth of this technique in India.

Addressing the couples assembled in the auditorium, Dr. Narendra Malhotra tried to make the facts about this technique clear by explaining the entire procedure. He said that a test tube baby is merely a layman's term referring to a child that is conceived outside the woman's body. The process is referred to as "in vitro" (outside the body) fertilization. Simply put, eggs are removed from the mother's ovary and incubated with sperm from the father. After fertilization, the "pre-embryos" are allowed to divide 2-4 times (in a "test tube", hence the name) and then returned to the mother's uterus where they can develop normally.

He said that by adapting these procedures, women with otherwise untreatable infertility problems have given birth to perfectly healthy
babies and this baby show has proved that this technique does not give birth to "artificial" babies.

Talking to the "UNN", Dr. Mrs. Jaideep Malhotra said that in addition to the personal grief and suffering it causes, the inability to have children - especially in poor communities - can create broader problems, particularly for the women, in terms of social stigma, economic hardship, social isolation and even violence. Established in 1997 with a motto of being a mother & baby friendly hospital, providing healthcare to the poorest of the poor, the centre is has followed this primary objective. On this occasion, Dr. Malhotra also announced free IVF treatment for ten couples who cannot afford the expensive treatment, as a special bonanza on the delivery of the 400th test tube baby of the centre.

She said that the centre is also running a fully equipped Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic with facilities for all testings, evaluation & treatment and counseling for karyotyping for couples with repeated spontaneous abortions due to fetal chromosomal abnormalities.
